Description

Presented is an antique, Irish sterling silver platter or serving spoon made in Dublin in 1766. This 18th century, Georgian piece is done in a classic, rounded end form and the tip of the handle is curved backwards, which was commonly done in Ireland, presumably so it can be hooked on the edge of a bowl or platter and not fall in. The front of the handle has an old crest of a winged dragon or griffin, although worn over the past 250 plus years. The back is marked with the crowned harp for the city of Dublin, the Hibernia mark for sterling silver purity, and a date letter S for the year 1766. There is a maker's mark, but it is too worn to determine. This piece is in good overall condition for its age. There is some slight denting to the bowl, but nothing major, and could easily be touched up by a silversmith if so desired. Length: 11 1/8 inches. Weight: 88 grams.
